My Relational Style Card

How I Connect

Understanding how individual students navigate social environments is crucial for building a safe, supportive classroom or afterschool setting. However, educators often assume all students connect in the same way—expecting every child to thrive through direct conversation or large-group activities. When a student's natural social style is misunderstood, quiet presence can be mistaken for disinterest, and humor can be misinterpreted as disruption, leading to relational friction and missed opportunities for genuine connection.

My Relational Style Card: How I Connect solves this challenge by providing teachers and youth development staff with a structured diagnostic tool to lead with Curiosity First. Designed for students in grades 3 through 8, this reflection card allows youth to communicate their unique relational preferences, energy drivers, and ideal social settings. It helps staff tailor their approach to match how each student naturally builds trust.

By giving students a voice to identify what recharges or exhausts their social energy, this resource helps educators create intentional, low-stress environments. It equips site teams with actionable insights to design balanced group dynamics, respect personal boundaries, and cultivate deeper adult-student and peer relationships.
